Jacket and pant pockets are often sewn shut for a number of reasons, including maintaining the shape because the stitched pockets help protect from dust, damage, and being stretched out before purchase and during the shipping process.
Functional pockets are usually sewn shut with a single thread, and if you cut it and tug, it should unravel easily! Sometimes there may be more though, so we recommend removing it very carefully.
